Words of Thanks to the Knights of Columbus:
By Joseph Williams, Head Coach of the Lady Griffins and our Chairman of the Board
You may notice some wonderful improvements in the gym tonight. Two new scoreboards and shot clocks at each end of the gym and a beautifully restored gym floor. We have the Knights of Columbus to thank for this and tonight Fr. John is going to re-christen and bless the gym.
I hope you will forgive me, while standing on a basketball court, for referencing one of the greatest Catholic sports figures of all time – who just happens to be a football guy -Vince Lombardi – the man for whom the super bowl trophy is named and the great coach of the Green Bay Packers. Coach Lombardi was known for standing on the sidelines with a rolled up playbook in one hand and in his other hand, clenched in a fist behind his back, were his rosary beads. He was a faithful man, attended the sacraments and was not just one of the winningest coaches of all time, he was also a Knight of Columbus.
About leadership, Coach Lombardi said, "Leadership does not exist in the abstract but is judged in terms of what one does in the specific situation."
On behalf of both the St. Marie Reapers, the HFA community, our athletic program, and more specifically our basketball teams we want to thank the Knights for taking the leadership to restore this gym that gives our teams a place we can practice, play and call home.
At HFA we aspire to teach our kids about the virtues of charity and generosity and it is good for them to see these notions taken from the abstract into the practical with this meaningful display of generosity by the Knights of Columbus. Your care for our school and the generosity you extend to us has been indispensable. This latest gesture of magnanimity makes us all the more grateful. Thank you!
