Holy Family Academy, this summer rather than assigning each class a different book to read, all students will be required to read The Wise Woman by George MacDonald. For those unfamiliar with Macdonald, he was born in 1824 in Scotland and was a contemporary and friend of Lewis Carroll, who wrote Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Though he began as a Presbyterian minister, his love for liturgy caused him to become a priest in the Church of England. His more famous works include The Princess and the Goblin, The Princess and Curdie, and Phantastes, the last of which was so influential on C.S. Lewis that he claimed it baptized his imagination.

The Wise Woman is one of MacDonald’s shorter fairy-tales and thus more easily consumable by all of our students. Students are to read the book and prepare for a quiz and discussion on it at Camp Fatima at the start of next year. The class who does the best on the quiz will win a hot pancake breakfast on our last day at Fatima.
